Kirwan, John, Sir, 1869-1949
Variant namesKirwan came to Australia in early 1890's and to W.A. in 1895 where he entered into partnership at Kalgoorlie with the proprietors of The Western Argus Weekly and The Kalgoorlie Miner daily newspapers. He took over editorial control of both papers and wielded considerable political power. He was elected to the first Federal Parliament (1901-1903) and was a member of the W.A. Legislative Council from 1908 to 1946 being its President from 1926 to 1946. He was a foundation member of the Senate of the University of W.A. (1912-1933). He was knighted in 1930 and awarded a K.C.M.G. in 1947.
