Biographical History
Kirwan came to Australia in early 1890's and to W.A. in 1895 where he entered into partnership at Kalgoorlie with the proprietors of The Western Argus Weekly and The Kalgoorlie Miner daily newspapers. He took over editorial control of both papers and wielded considerable political power. He was elected to the first Federal Parliament (1901-1903) and was a member of the W.A. Legislative Council from 1908 to 1946 being its President from 1926 to 1946. He was a foundation member of the Senate of the University of W.A. (1912-1933). He was knighted in 1930 and awarded a K.C.M.G. in 1947.
Journalist and politician; came to Australia 1890, was editor-in-chief of the Kalgoorlie Miner and Western Argus; elected to Federal Parliament, 1901, as member for Kalgoorlie. In 1908 he was elected to Legislative Council of W.A. where he sat until his retirement in 1946. He was President 1926-1946 (Aust. Encyclopedia).
