Young, John

Hide Profile

John Young was a successful Halifax businessman, author, and politician. Born in Falkirk, Scotland, in 1773 to Janet and William Young, he was educated at the University of Glasgow around 1790. Young performed well in his theological studies at the university but decided not to become a Presbyterian Minister as his family had hoped. Instead, he abandoned theology to pursue business in Falkirk and Glasgow. He married Agnes Renny and had nine children, including George, Charles, and William. In 1814 Young and his family moved to Nova Scotia where he founded the very successful John Young and Company.
