He earned his B.S. in Physics from Caltech in 1930, his M.A. in English from Claremont College in 1931, and his Ph.D. in English at Yale in 1936. For his service during the war, Foladare received the Presidential Certificate of Merit.

In 1946, Foladare returned to Santa Barbara, where he was the first chairman of the English Department to be appointed by the University of California. He retired from UCSB in 1974.
