Biography
Joseph Foladare was born in Los Angeles on July 9, 1909. He earned his B.S. in Physics from Caltech in 1930, his M.A. in English from Claremont College in 1931, and his Ph.D. in English at Yale in 1936. In 1935, he took a teaching position in the English Department at Iowa State College in Ames. In 1940, he joined Santa Barbara State College (later University of California, Santa Barbara) as an English Professor.
During World War II, Foladare took an extended leave from his position at Santa Barbara to serve as the Supervisor of the Editorial Section for the Caltech Rocket Project, sponsored by the Office of Scientific Research and Development. He spent the next five years (1941-46) compiling and editing technical reports related to the design and use of rockets for war, and overseeing the publication of a series on monographs on the subject. For his service during the war, Foladare received the Presidential Certificate of Merit.
In 1946, Foladare returned to Santa Barbara, where he was the first chairman of the English Department to be appointed by the University of California. He retired from UCSB in 1974.
