Born on August 2, 1953, Lourdes Torres is a community activist from the South Bronx area of New York City. She was active in numerous organizations including Union Estudiantil Pedro Albizu Campos (Pedro Albizu Campos Student Union), and the Committee Against Fort Apache which was created in protest to the film Fort Apache: the Bronx. Torres was a founding member of the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights, which became an important civil rights organization, and served as its secretary and treasurer. Torres also helped organize and was a leader of the Puerto Rican Council for Higher Education. This Organization promoted research and analysis of the situation of Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics in the City University of New York. Currently she is the Director of the Office of Development and Grants Administration at Hostos Community College.
