Stephen Duncan was a planter and banker of Natchez, Mississippi. The Duncan family plantations included L'Argent, Auburn, Camperdown, Carlisle, Duncan, Duncannon, Duncansby, Ellisle, Homochitto, Middlesex, Oakley, Rescue, Reserve, and Attakapas Plantation. Duncan was married to Margaret Duncan, née Ellis (d. 1815), and had two children, John Ellis Duncan and Sarah Jane Duncan. He married his second wife, Catherine A. Duncan, née Bingaman, in 1819 and had four children, Stephen Duncan, Jr., Charlotte N. Duncan, M. L. Duncan, and Henry P. Duncan.

Stephen Duncan was a planter and banker of Natchez Mississippi. The Duncan plantations included L'Argent, Auburn, Camperdown, Carlisle, Duncan, Ducannon, Duncansby, Ellisie, Homochitto, Middlesex, Oakley, Rescue, and Attakapas Plantation. He kept residences in Natchez and New York City. Duncan was married to Margaret Duncan, nee Ellis (d.1815) and had two children, John Ellis Duncan and Sarah Jane Duncan.

He married his second wife, Catherine A. Duncan, nee Bingaman, in 1819 and had four children, Stephen Duncan, Jr., Charlotte N. Duncan, M.L. Duncan, and Henry P. Duncan.

The recipient of the letters, Charles P. Leverich, president of the Bank of New York and mercantile agent for sale of plantation commodities, acted as Duncan's financial advisor, agent, and banker.
