Charles P. Leverich and his brother Henry S. Leverich were shipping merchants, commission agents, and investment bankers from New York. Charles acted as factor for Stephen Duncan, MD, a wealthy cotton and sugar planter of the Natchez, Mississippi, area. Charles became director of the Bank of New York in 1840, Vice-president in 1853 and President of the bank from 1863 until his death in 1876. Charles and Henry both married nieces of Dr. Stephen Duncan. The Leverich-Duncan alliance greatly influenced the agricultural and financial development of the antebellum South.
