Arthur Brisbane was the highest-paid, most widely-read journalist of his time. Born in Buffalo to an affluent family, he received a private education in France and Germany, returning to New York to become a journalist. After a successful apprenticeship at the Sun, he was hired by Joseph Pulitzer to develop the Sunday World, and achieved overwhelming success with innovations such as color illustrations and color comics. Unable to write an editorial column for Pulitzer, Brisbane jumped to Hearst's Evening Journal, where his combination of sensationalism, marketing savvy, and solid writing created an enormous success. His daily column, Today, was syndicated in hundreds of newspapers across the country.
