Bullock, Shan F., 1865-1935

Shan F. Bullock (1865-1935), b. 1865, Crom, Co. Fermanagh, as John William Bullock (later changing his name to Shan Fadh Bullock after a title-character in William Carleton), son of Thomas Bullock, farmer and bailiff to the Earl of Erne/Fermanagh. Ed. Farra School, Co. Westmeath. After a short spell working on his father's farm moved to London where he spent his working life as a civil servant. Enjoyed 30 years of literary success from 1893 with the publication of his first collection of short stories, The Awkward Squad . A prolific writer, Bullock was responsible for more than 20 titles including novels, volumes of stories, books of verse and biographies. He is generally noted for his ability to portray both Catholics and Protestants in his novels with sympathy and open-mindedness not often shown by other Northern writers. d. 1935, Cheam, Surrey.
