Echols, John M.
Variant namesProfessor of linguistics and Asian studies; chairman of the Department of Far Eastern Studies, Cornell University.
An authority on Indonesian languages and literature, Echols joined the Cornell faculty in 1952, served for several years as chairman of the Department of Asian Studies and at the time of his returement in 1978 was associate director of the Cornell Southeast Asia Program and the Modern Indonesia Project. The Southeast Asia collection in Cornell University's Olin Library was named in his honor in 1977. Born in 1912, he died in 1982.
