George Clymer, a Naval surgeon, was assigned to the sloop-of-war Cyane, part of the Pacific Squadron under Commodore Thomas Ap Catesby Jones. The Cyane left Norfolk, sailed around Cape Horn, and joined Jones in taking possession of Monterey, California in October, 1842, under the mistaken assumption that the United States was at war with Mexico. After the error was discovered, Mexican rule of Monterey was reinstated, and the Cyane left Monterey for Santa Barbara.

George Clymer, Jr., son of George Clymer, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was a doctor and in 1892 received a commission in the navy, entering as an assistant surgeon. He was promoted to full surgeon in 1838. Clymer served in the Mediterranean and later with the Pacific Squadron (1841-1844) on the U.S.S. Cyane, during which time he wrote this account. He retired in 1866 and died in 1881. He was also an author and wrote several published items incluing Author of The principles of naval staff rank; and its history in the United States navy, for over half a century.
