George Young, son of Edward Young, enlisted as a private in Company H, 28th Infantry of the New York Volunteers. He later served with Company A, 143rd New York Volunteers, serving for the majority of the time as a First Lieutenant. He was promoted to Captain in June of 1864 but had not received the formal promotion by the time of the Battle of Peachtree Creek. He received a leg wound at the Battle of Peachtree Creek on July 20, 1864. Young received an honorable discharge on October 26, 1864. In 1884 he under went surgery for his wound of which a detailed account was published. His family resided in Parksville, Sullivan County, New York. He married Sarah Schoonmaker following the war.
