Adler, Karl, 1890-1973

Born in Buttenhausen, Wuerttemberg on January 25, 1890, Karl Adler studied music at the Stuttgart Conservatory, of which he became director in 1922. He was a cofounder of the Verein zur Foerderung der Volksbildung, an adult-education organization, and director of its music department. In 1926, he was a director of the Juedisches Lehrhaus Stuttgart. After his dismissal from his other positions in 1933, he became director of the Stuttgarter Juedische Kunstgemeinschaft, as well as leader of the music department of the Mittelstelle fuer juedische Erwachsenenbildung, a division of the Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden. From 1938 until 1940 when he emigrated to the United States, he directed the local emigration program. He taught music at various institutions, including Yeshiva University, and died in New York on July 10, 1973.
