William Simpson was born and educated in Glasgow; he apprenticed as an architect, and later as a lithographer. He moved to London and worked for the lithographers Day & Son, travelling to Sebastopol to cover the Crimean War in pictures. He travelled extensively, visiting Russia, China, Afghanistan, India, and Egypt, producing popular and authentic prints of places and events, and became known as "The Prince of Pictorial Correspondents." He earned the admiration of the royal family, was a frequent guest at the royal residence, and was often commissioned to make pictures of royal ceremonies and events.
