Biographical History

Artist and war correspondent for ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS.

From the description of Letters, 1857-1872 and n.d. (Duke University Library). WorldCat record id: 24778380

William Simpson was born and educated in Glasgow; he apprenticed as an architect, and later as a lithographer. He moved to London and worked for the lithographers Day & Son, travelling to Sebastopol to cover the Crimean War in pictures. He travelled extensively, visiting Russia, China, Afghanistan, India, and Egypt, producing popular and authentic prints of places and events, and became known as "The Prince of Pictorial Correspondents." He earned the admiration of the royal family, was a frequent guest at the royal residence, and was often commissioned to make pictures of royal ceremonies and events. In more sedate moments, he worked in watercolor and oils, exhibiting paintings at the Royal Society and other galleries.

From the description of William Simpson letter to Dear Fulleylove, 1887 May 18. (Pennsylvania State University Libraries). WorldCat record id: 71802207
