Brown, W. C. (William Carey), 1854-1939

William Carey Brown (1854-1939) was a distinguished military officer, inventor, and historical researcher. His lifelong service in the U.S. Army took him to the American West and many countries around the world. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy in 1877, he returned to West Point in 1885-90 as Adjutant. His notable military service after the American West was during the Spanish American War in Cuba, the Philippine Insurrection, the Punitive Expedition in Mexico, and World War I. After retirement from active duty in 1918, he assisted in the Quartermaster General's Office in Washington, D.C., engaged in historical research on military topics, and worked to promote benefits for retired military personnel.

William Carey Brown was a United States Army lieutenant and captain in the 1st Cavalry Regiment; major, 39th, 45th and 42nd Infantry Regiments; colonel, 3rd and 10th Cavalry Regiments; colonel, inspector for the Eastern Department and 42nd Infantry Division and inspector for the Quartermaster Corps of the A.E.F. (American Expeditionary Forces).

William Carey Brown was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. He graduated from the United States Military Academy (USMA) in 1877 and served in the West as a company grade officer with the 1st U.S. Cavalry Regiment from 1877 to 1899. Brown was brevetted for gallant service at Big Creek, Idaho, and two reconnaissance expeditions in 1879. During the Spanish-American War, he served as an officer of U.S. Volunteers and was cited for gallantry at the Battle of Santiago, Cuba, in 1898. He participated in the Punitive Expedition into Mexico and in World War I (WWI). He retired from the military in December 1918 as a colonel and was later named a brigadier general on the retired list in 1927.
