Born in Warsaw, he studied in Paris in the 1920s, and was part of the "Groupe Philosophies" with Pierre Morhange, Henri Lefebvre, and others. The Groupe was connected for a time with the Surrealists and later with Marxism and the Parti Communiste. In 1929/1930 Guterman moved to the U.S. where he became best known as a translator of philosophical and literary works.
