Lyman B. Kirkpatrick was Inspector General and Executive Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and served with the agency from its inception in 1947 until 1965. Kirkpatrick began his work in intelligence services in the U.S. Army and the Office of Special Services during World War II. In 1944 he was given the assignment of intelligence briefing officer to General Omar Bradley. As inspector general of the CIA he investigated and authorized a controversial report which was critical of the agency's planning and execution of the Bay of Pigs operation. In 1965 Kirkpatrick retired from the agency and accepted a position as a professor of political science at Brown University where he taught until 1982.
