Humphrey family.

George M. Humphrey was secretary for the United States Treasury Department from 1953-1957. He was the first Saginawian to win a cabinet appointment. He was born in Cheboygan, Michigan in 1890 and graduated from the Saginaw Public Schools. He received his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1912. He practiced law in Saginaw before moving to Cleveland in 1917 where he joined M.A. Hanna & Co. He was instrumental in the organization of the Nation Steel Corporation in 1929, the Pittsburgh Consolidated Coal Company in 1945, and the Iron Ore Company of Canada in 1950. He received the Charles F. Rand Medal awarded by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers for distinguished achievement in mining administration in 1947. In 1948 he received the Saginaw High School Distinguished Alumnus Award.
