Emmons was a naval lieutenant from whom the American Museum of Natural History acquired extensive collections of Northwest Coast Indian material, 1880s-1920.

Emmons was a U.S. Naval Academy graduate who was stationed on board the U.S.S. Pinta during the 1880s and 1890s. After retiring from the Navy in 1899, he took on special projects for the U.S. government that involved working with the natives of Alaska and British Columbia.

George Thornton Emmons (June 6, 1852 - June 11, 1945) was an ethnographic photographer and a U.S. Navy Lieutenant. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1874 and in 1881 attained the master rank, in 1883 lieutenant j.g., and in 1887 lieutenant. In 1882 Emmons was stationed in Alaska and stayed in Alaska until the 1890s. Emmons took great interest in the Tlingit Indians of Alaska and wrote various articles on the Tlingit, and two books (one published posthumously) that concerned the Tlingit.

Lieutenant, U.S. Navy. Collected Tlingit art intensively, but only those pieces no longer used by the people, and carefully recorded the history of each piece. Author of several works on Northwest Coast Indians, some of which were published as part of the Publications of the Jesup North Pacific Expedition, a subseries of the Memoirs of the American Museum of Natural History.

George Thornton Emmons was an anthropologist and collector of northwest coast native artifacts. He wrote several books including: The Chilkat Blanket, The Basketry of the Tlingit, and The Tahltan Indians.
