Born in Spain 1930, Ellacuría joined the Jesuits in 1947. He was sent to El Salvador where he became a naturalized citizen. Ellacuría worked closely with the philosopher Xavier Zubiri and wrote his 1965 dissertation on Zubiri's philosophy. Ellacuría was president of the University of Central America (Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas), chair of the philosophy department, and editor of several publications. He was a primary proponent of liberation theology, speaking and writing on poverty and oppression in El Salvador regularly contributing to newspapers, and radio and television programs. Ellacuría was murdered 1989 in his home along with five priests, their housekeeper, and her daughter by a right-wing Salvadoran army squad.
