William Skinner Simpson (1795-1868) was born in London, England to Reverend Robert Simpson and Sarah Lee Simpson. He emigrated in 1819 to Petersburg, Virginia, where he married his shipboard companion Mary Levick in 1820. In Petersburg, Simpson worked as an insurance agent.
