Lawrence Grennan was born September 23, 1837, in Kings County, Ireland, the son of Lawrence and Ellen (Money) Grennan. He came to the United States in 1858, arriving in Ohio in October of that year. He served in Company D of the Twentieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry from September of 1861 to July of 1865. He was promoted from private to Hospital Steward on May 1, 1865. Grennan married Julia Lowry of Delaware County, Ohio, on March 26, 1866; they had five children. He taught in the public schools of Oxford, Ohio, for more than thirty-nine years. He was also a licensed Methodist Episcopal preacher. He died in 1910, and is buried in the Oxford Cemetery.
