The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) was founded in 1916 at a meeting of 104 interested persons at the University of Missouri. It is one of the largest professional organizations in the field of mathematics with 27,000 members.

The mission of the MAA is to "to advance the mathematical sciences, especially at the collegiate level." The core interests of the MAA are education, research, professional development, public policy and public appreciation. The MAA has its national headquarters in Washington D.C. In addition to the national venue, there exist 27 regional sections as well as seven subject-related special interest groups.
