Carpenter, Cyrus Clay, 1829-1898
Variant namesCyrus Clay Carpenter came to Iowa in 1854 and settled in Fort Dodge. There he was a teacher, surveyor and lawyer. He served in the first legislature elected after the state constitution of 1855 was adopted. During the Civil War he served in the Quartermaster's Corps. In 1866 he was elected Register of the State Land Office, then in 1871 he began the first of two terms as Iowa's governor. He later served as Second Comptroller of the Treasurey, Railroad Commissioner, and U.S. Congressman. He also returned to the Iowa state legislature and was postmaster at Fort Dodge. He died in 1898.
