S. Sterling McMillan (1907-2003), economist and author, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of S. Sterling McMillin and Ruth Strong McMillin. He was educated at Princeton University and Harvard University where he obtained a M.B.A. in 1937. McMillan, who changed the spelling of his last name from "in" to "an", worked as a securities analyst and was a director and secretary-treasurer of Strong, Cobb and Company of Cleveland, Ohio. While working as an instructor at the University of Indiana, McMillan completed his doctoral studies. He joined the faculty of Western Reserve University in 1947 as an assistant professor and taught there until his retirement in 1969. He also served as chairman of the Economics Department. In addition to his academic career, McMillan also authored several books including Case Studies of Government Cooperation in Founding New Industries (1970) and founded Predicasts, Incorporated (1960) a securities analysis firm, serving as chairman of the board until 1981. McMillan had a long career as a volunteer worker in many local philanthropic organizations, such as the Children's Aid Society and the Welfare Federation of Cleveland, serving as a trustee and financial consultant. For his service to the community, McMillan was named the United Torch Volunteer of the Year in 1974.
