Winston Wilkinson was hired in 1934, along with John Stone, by Arthur Kyle Davis, Jr., of the University of Virginia, to transcribe music. (Stone was hired to collect folk songs.) Funding for this activity came from the Civil Works Administration, a New Deal program. Along with his wife, Marie, Wilkinson also compiled between 1932 and 1941 a private manuscript collection of traditional melodies.
