Brenton entered the navy in 1788. He was made lieutenant, 1795; commander, 1802; and captain, 1808. He saw little active service after 1813. Among his published works are: "Naval History of Great Britain from the Year 1738 to 1822" in 1823; and "Life and Correspondence of John, Earl of St. Vincent" in 1838.
