Upfield, Arthur William, 1888-1964
Variant namesArthur Upfield was an Australian crime novelist whose chief character was Detective Bonaparte. Some of his novels were set in the West Australian outback.

Born at Gosport, England, Upfield arrived in Adelaide in 1910 to take up a position with a real estate firm, but instead headed inland and got a job as a boundary rider. He spent many years in the Australian outback and his famous character "Boney" was based on a halfcaste tracker he had known. His books include "The widows of Broome" and "The sands of Windee".

Arthur Upfield was an Australian author of crime fiction. His first novel, 'The house of Cain', was published in 1928. He is best known for his series of crime novels, whose main character is a part-Aboriginal detective called Napoleon Bonaparte, usually referred to as 'Bony'. Upfield was the first non-American to become a full member of the Mystery Writers of America.
