Biographical Note: James Wilson Poultney was a professor of Classics and an author on philological topics.

He was born in Baltimore County, MD in 1907 and educated at The Johns Hopkins University. He received his Ph. D. in Greek in 1934 and taught on the faculty at Hopkins, 1932-1937, 1947-1973. He is a member of the American Philological Association and served as its secretary in the 1950s. Dr. Poultney contributed many articles and reviews to language journals and published two books in his field.
