Hide Profile
The Classics Department was founded in 1946 when the Departments of German and Latin merged. Both languages had been taught at Johns Hopkins from the time of the University's founding. The Greek Seminary was formed by Basil Gildersleeve in 1878 in order to give graduate students a forum in which to explore topics of interest to them, and this was followed by the foundation of the Latin Seminary in 1881. The department assumed responsibility for courses in archaeology in 1948 and for Sanskrit in 1954.
