Elizabeth Mayer was the wife of William Mayer, a psychiatrist who had his office in Amityville, Long Island, in the early 1940s, at the time that Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel first met the couple. Alma recounts that meeting in her memoir Mein Leben (spelling their name "Meyer"); it was through the Mayers that Alma became acquainted with Benjamin Britten, who was staying at their house.
