Caroline Skeel was born and educated in London. She was first appointed to Westfield College in 1895 as a Visiting Lecturer in Classics and History and remained on the staff until her resignation through ill-health in 1929. She was the founder of Westfield College's School of History and the first Westfield teacher to gain a Chair. She was responsible for the College Library and in 1931 donated a large part of her own book collection to the College. In 1930 the Skeel Prize for History was established. She was a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a founder of the Economic History Society. With her two elder sisters she inherited the family fortune, established by her father and brother as export merchants, and all three were benefactors of Westfield.
