David Nichol Smith (1875-1962) was Merton Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford from 1929 until his retirement in 1946. He was an authority on English Literature from the Restoration to the end of the eighteenth century.

David Nichol Smith assisted Sir Walter Raleigh with the Arden Shakespeare Series for several years, authored a number of scholarly works including Shakespeare in the Eighteenth Century (1928), and edited the Oxford Book of Eighteenth Century Verse (1926).
