The Illinois Department of Labor, created by the Civil Administrative Code of 1917, succeeded the Board of Labor Commissioners (also known as Bureau of Labor Statistics), State Factory Inspector, State Board of Arbitration, Free Employment Offices, Inspector of Private Employment Agencies, and Industrial Board. The Department has administrative duties which include oversight of unemployment compensation; workmen's compensation; state employment agencies; labor mediation services; and industrial safety.
