Edwin Bolton emmigrated from England with his parents; they settled as farmers in Wisc. Edwin Bolton and his wife Rosaline Cady had twelve children, including Frederick Elmer Bolton and Herbert Eugene Bolton. Frederick and Herbert both became academics: Frederick became a dean at the University of Washington and Herbert became the head of the History Department at the University of California, Berkeley and the director of The Bancroft Library. Herbert Bolton also worked at the University of Texas.
Herbert E. Bolton and his wife Gertrude Janes had six daughters and one son. Frances Latham Appleton, the eldest of the Bolton daughters, became a social worker in the Los Angeles, Calif. area. Jane Adams, the youngest Bolton daughter, became a teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area.
