Before the United Student Peace Committee came into existence in 1936, the Student League for Industrial Democracy and the National Student League were active in a student strike against war in April 1934. In 1935, these two groups were merged into the American Student Union. Student mobilizations to protest Italy's invasion of Ethiopia in 1936 produced the United Student Peace Committee. More than one million students from a dozen national organizations protested the militarization of college campuses and opposed the war budget; they also accepted the validity of the Oxford (Movement) Oath. The USPC's headquarters were in New York City.
