Jeremiah Howard Gilman was born in Thomaston, ME, November 11, 1831. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY in 1856. He defended Fort Barrancas from the state militia in April 1861 and held Ft. Pickens, Pensacola, FL until it was reinforced. He served in other Civil War campaigns and retired in 1895.
