Andrew Thomas McNamara (b. May 14, 1905, East Providence, R.I.-d. Apr. 6, 2002, Fort Belvoir, Virginia), Lieutenant General in the U.S. Army, graduated from West Point in 1928. He served with the 35th Infantry in Hawaii, transferred to the Quartermaster Corps in 1937, and in 1942 became Chief Quartermaster of the II Corps which established the principal supply line in North Africa. In 1943 he was assigned as Chief Quartermaster of the 1st Army, in preparation for the D-Day landing at Normandy. In the 1950s, General McNamara became Commandant of the U.S. Army Quartermaster School where he instituted a major reorganization and stepped up training to meet the needs of the Korean conflict. He also served as Executive to the Under Secretary of the Army; as Assistant Chief of Staff, U.S. Army in Europe; and in 1957 President Eisenhower nominated him to become The Quartermaster General. In the early 1960s, he served as Deputy Commanding General, 8th U.S. Army, and was the first Director of the Defense Supply Agency, serving in this post until his 1964 retirement.
