A department of motion picture production was created at Brigham Young University in 1953; this was the forerunner of the current LDS Motion Picture Studio in Provo. In 1963 BYU President Ernest Wilkinson boasted that the church university was one of only two universities in the nation with a film production department (the other being the University of Southern California). During this period, under the leadership of Wetzel "Judge" Whitaker, numerous films were created at BYU of a doctrinal or historical character.
