Jonathan Barnett was born on January 6, 1937, in Boston, Massachusetts. He received a B.A. from Yale College in 1958, where he was a Scholar of the House in Architecture; a B.A. from Cambridge University in 1960; and a B.Arch. from Yale in 1963. Following graduation, he worked for the firm of Smith, Haines, Lundberg and Waehler and designed several university buildings. In 1964 he became associate editor of the Architectural Record magazine. In 1965 he was an advisor to the John Lindsay mayoral campaign. As a consultant in urban design and renewal, Barnett advises cities throughout the United States; private investors; and government agencies, such as the National Park Service and the New York State Urban Development Corporation. He was professor of architecture and director of the Graduate Program in Urban Design at the City College of New York. Barnett is the author of numerous articles and books on city planning and urban renewal.
