Wrightsville and Tennille Railroad Company.

The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.

(Cont.) On September 27, 1881, the Wrightsville and Sun Hill Railroad Company was incorporated. The Company received its charter on December 22, 1883 and changed its name to the Wrightsville and Tennille Railroad Company. By 1885, the Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia owned the majority of stock in the Company.

(Cont.) The Wrightsville and Tennille was very active during its first several years and purchased the Dublin and Wrightsville Railroad Company on February 1, 1889, and the Dublin and South Western Railroad on July 1, 1906, extending its line to 103 miles.

(Cont.) In 1899, the Wrightsville and Tennille became a subsidiary line fo the Central of Georgia Railway. The Company ran into financial difficulties between 1932 and the early 1940s, during which time it was forced to sell off a large amount of its track. In 1941, the Company was left with only 34 miles of track operating between Tennille, Georgia and Dublin, Georgia. On December 15, 1969, the Wrightsville and Tennille consolidated with the Central of Georgia Railway, the Savannah and Atlanta Railway Company, and the Georgia and Florida Railway Company to form the Central of Georgia Railroad Company.
