Moore, William Reid, 1921-2008.
Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. W.R. Moore was an antinuclear activist of Columbia, S.C., who claimed membership in more environmental and anti-nuclear power groups than anyone else in S.C. during the 1970s; Moore served as the first president of Environmentalists, Inc. (est. 1972) but resigned after one year to devote more time to antinuclear activism.
Born in Barnesville, Ga., he was the son of Arthur Creed Moore and Bernice Jewel Jones Moore. In 1939 he graduated from Gordon Military College(Barnesville, Ga.). He joined the Georgia National Guard Barnesville Blues which left Lamar County 16 Sept. 1940 taking on official duties as Co. B., 121st Infantry Regiment, 30th Division. He attended OCS at Fort Benning, Ga., in 1942. He served in the Aleutian Islands during WWII, Korea, France, and two tours in Germany. In the U.S. he served at Fort Benning, Ga., Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Denver, Colo., and retired at Fort Jackson, S.C., in 1964. Died 30 Nov. 2008, Columbia, S.C.
