John E. Smith was born in Newark, New Jersey and left home at the age of fourteen as a cabin-boy when he sailed to San Francisco for the Gold Rush. In 1854, he joined the Second Oregon militia and served in the Rogue River Indian War. He engaged in a number of Indian battles in the region and he settled in Reardan.
