Emmanuel Lutheran Church (Bremerton, Wash.)

Hide Profile

During World War II many people from other states migrated to this area and lived in temporary housing projects. This area was surveyed, and in September of 1945 the Mission Board sent a young mission pastor, Gordon Trystad, and his wife. The first church service was held in the home of J. B. Johnson on the corner of Perry Avenue and Magnuson, adjacent to the church property. On February 5, 1946 Manette Lutheran Church organized with 21 members, then meeting in the pastor’s home. Plans for a new church were discussed. In May the quanset hut was purchased. First services were held in the unfinished church in December of 1948. The church was finished and dedicated January 5, 1949. The name was changed to Emmanuel Lutheran in January of 1953. The first service in the new church was in November of 1956, and the building was dedicated on December 16 of that year.
