Our Saviour's Lutheran Church (Bremerton, Wash.)

Hide Profile

On January 31, 1893, a group of people met for the purpose of organizing a Lutheran congregation under the leadership of E. B. Slettedal. Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Bremerton, Washington was incorporated on March 15, 1893. The first church was built on Fourth Street. In the late thirties it became evident there was a need for a larger place to worship, so the congregation bought lots at the present site. On Sunday, September 21, 1941 the new church was dedicated. By 1948 the congregation had grown to a point that the present building was inadequate. An addition to the present building was completed and dedicated in September of 1951. In May of 1955 property on Wildcat Lake was purchased and became Lutherhaven Bible Camp. Congregations included in this purchase were: First and Grace Lutheran of Paulsbo; Vinland, Emmanuel and Our Saviour’s Lutheran of Bremerton; Bethany and First Lutheran of Port Orchard; and Silverdale Lutheran. The first Bible Camp was held in the summer of 1958 and it has been used for that purpose every year since. Enrollment in Sunday School increased to the amount so that there was need for larger facilities. Three lots west of the church property were purchased and a Youth Center was added as well as more space for parking.
