G. Edward Schuh, 1930-2008, was an internationally recognized expert in agricultural and food policy, economic and rural development and international trade. Schuh came to the University of Minnesota in 1979 where he served until 1984 as professor and head of the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics. In 1984 he accepted a position as the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at the World Bank in Washington D.C. In 1987 Schuh returned to the University of Minnesota to serve as Dean of the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, a position he held until 1997. From 1997 until his retirement in 2006, he was Director of the Orville and Jane Freeman Center for International Economic Policy in the Humphrey Center, focusing on agricultural and economic development policy, international trade and investment policy, and science and technology policy. In 1998, Schuh was awarded the title of Regent's professor, the highest honor bestowed upon the faculty at the University of Minnesota. He retired from the University of Minnesota in 2006.

G. Edward Schuh, 1930-2008, was an internationally recognized expert in agricultural and food policy, economic and rural development and international trade. He held a B.S. (1952) from Purdue University in agricultural education, a M.S. (1954) from Michigan State University in agricultural economics, and a M.A. (1958) and Ph.D. (1961) from the University of Chicago in economics.

Schuh served as professor of agricultural economics at Purdue University from 1959-1978. Concurrent with his appointment at Purdue, Schuh served as Program Advisor to the Ford Foundation from 1966 to 1972, focusing efforts on creation of graduate level programs in agriculture in Brazil. On leave from Purdue from 1974 to 1975, Schuh served as Senior Staff Economist on President Ford’s Council of Economic Advisors. Schuh was the first director, from 1977 to 1978, of Purdue’s Center for Public Policy and Public Administration. From 1978 to 1979, he was Deputy Under-Secretary for International Affairs and Commodity Programs at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Schuh is the author of over 100 scientific publications. He authored or co-authored six books and edited another six. The recipient of dozens of honors and awards for international service, Schuh was elected a Fellow of the American Agricultural Economics Association in 1984, the American Academy of Arts and Science in 1987, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1989.
