Enlisted as private in the 24th Massachusetts Infantry; was first lieutenant of 32nd Massachusetts Infantry when transferred on 13 Aug. 1862 to the 35th Mass. Inf.; at the battle of Antietam, Adj. Nathaniel Wales, 35th Massachusetts Infantry, donned breast armor before heading into the fight near Otto farm; listed as wounded on 17 Sept. 1862; he was later captured near White Sulphur Springs, Va., on 14 Nov. 1862, and paroled and returned to duty in Feb. 1863; promoted to rank of major and then colonel; resigned his commission in 1864.
