McGregor, James R. Sir, 1889-1973.
Sir James McGregor was born in 1889, the son of J. W. McGregor. He was the proprietor of J. W. McGregor and Co. and J. R. McGregor Pty. Ltd., which were wool exporting firms based in Sydney. Accordingly he acted as Chairman of the Australian Council of Woolbuyers and was a Technical member of the Central Wool Committee from 1939 to 1945. He was also a Trustee of the Sydney National Art Gallery, and numbered amongst his friends many of the contemporary artists working in Sydney and Australia at the time. Notable amongst these were Sir Lionel Lindsay and Sir Hans Heysen. In 1956 McGregor was created a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. McGregor was married to Freda Bruce Taylor in 1921, and she predeceased him in 1941. They had no children.
